Question

What method of cleaning is recommended to clean sofas, chairs, and loveseats? What is the going price to charge for these in New Jersey?

Answer

Probably the two most popular methods for commercial upholstery cleaning are hot water extraction and shampoo.
Heavily soiled upholstery may require a pre-conditioning pre-scrub prior to extraction plus an absorbent towel/acidic treatment to help it dry after cleaning.
A soil retardant shampoo is effective on mild to light soil. Make sure you have proper training before tackling upholstery. Check the tags for cleaning instructions and fiber identification as some fabrics are dry clean only.
In many cities you will see ads pricing chairs, love seats, and sofas at $49, $69, and $89. Cleaning light soil on dark fabric or doing over 20 items often qualifies for giving an additional 20% discount. Double your prices for off-white fabric. Another way to initially learn pricing is to clean your mother-in-law’s furniture and set your hourly rate accordingly. Don't short change yourself, it is hard work.
