Question

Our elevator cab floors are Emperador and Botticcino Classico marble with epoxy grout (over thin-set and a steel pan base). We need to thoroughly clean the floors and remove the years of finish and sealer build-up. Is there a product or a method that can be used rather than using a stripper, or must a stripper be used as well? Also, is it best to hone for a natural finish or apply a non-skid finish/sealant?

Answer

Marble reacts with acids, but finish strippers are alkaline so you should be safe with a careful application to loosen the old finishes. Use a pad or brush that will agitate the solution without scratching the floor.
Honing will be tough in an elevator cab due to the small area you are doing with no room to move easily. It might, in this case, be more sensible to apply a finish intended for marble.
Read over the material at:
www.marble-institute.com/industryresources/sealing.cfm from the Marble Institute of America so you are informed of your choices and then contact your Jan-San supplier for information on what product they may recommend for this application.
