Question

I have 2 cube trucks, both with slide-in truck mount units. We are running between 700-800 feet of both solution and vacuum hose, servicing 2 RX20s out of each truck, Both units produce 859 CFM. Hot water extraction is all we do other than tile and grout cleaning in the rest rooms. I have been hearing and studying about the encapsulation process and I have seen some impressive results from it. My question: Is the encapsulation process going to eliminate the need for hot water extraction?

Answer

Answer # 1:
No, encapsulation cleaning will not eliminate the need for hot water extraction. Encapsulation is an interim/appearance retention cleaning method. You may wish to read the IICRC S100 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Cleaning. It is available at www.iicrc.org.

Answer#2:
Our service division began using encapsulation about 7 years ago. It does an extremely good job of surface cleaning. In many cases, it rivals the appearance results of hot water extraction. Our preference is to incorporate encapsulation with the bonnet process because the bonnets become heavily soiled (evidence of immediate soil removal) and allow close to 4,000 sq. ft. per hour production times.
With the encapsulation process, the required time between cleanings was extended and drying time reduced to two hours. However, after about four cleanings, a deep extraction will be necessary to remove embedded soil from the base of the carpet since encapsulation lacks the ability to flush mud and critters from deep down.
An unscientific method to balance the two systems is to monitor the degree of soiling by comparing the center of the traffic lane with the edge. Whenever encapsulation cleaning fails to match the center with the edge, it is time for restorative HWE. Both methods can compliment, but not replace each other.
