Question

What is hi-speed floor burnishing and what equipment and chemicals are required?

Answer

Most single-disc rotary floor machines spin at 175 RPM. A burnisher spins at 1500 RPM or more.
At higher speeds more friction is generated when the pad comes in contact with the floor finish, with the heat hardening the finish and improving the gloss or shine. We call this burnishing and for the most part it has replaced spray buffing and polishing because it gives a better shine in less time.
Many floor finishes will burnish up to around 1500 RPM, but above that special formulations may be required to stand up to the friction and heat generated without powdering.
If you are thinking of using high-speed burnishing, contact your local Jan-San distributor for information and a test drive of the process, products and machines. Using a system of pads, chemicals and equipment that is designed to work together will save you some time and trouble.
