Question

We have 75 villas, some above the water and on the main island of Baros. The resort is called Baros and the floors are shown at www.BAROS.COM All the room floors are wood. In the bathrooms, we have granite surrounded by wood where it is normally dry. I need suggestions on how to maintain the floors with daily and periodic cleaning. Also, how to protect the floors. At the moment, we only sweep with a broom, and then mop with water and no chemical.

Answer

For daily mopping, I would suggest using a neutral detergent solution to loosen soil and to aid in its release from the mophead into the bucket. The granite should not require much effort to mop clean and it won’t need sealing. The wood should be sealed with an oil finish or a urethane to keep moisture out and prevent cracking. Check with the flooring supplier for product recommendations.
Clean mopheads mean cleaner floors. The detergent addition will also require using less water on the floors and less manual agitation with the mophead to loosen soil. Always press out the mophead as much as possible when working on a wood floor. All you want is a damp mophead to pick up spills and tracked in sea water.
The setting shows the possibility of sand getting tracked onto the floors. The sweeping should be carefully done to get grit out of the units before it can cause damage to the finished floors. If it is available there in the Maldives, a backpack vacuum may be a good solution to grit removal problems.
Considering the beautiful setting of your resort, there doesn’t seem to be much danger of soil buildup that the daily cleaning can’t handle. I would think a periodic scrubbing or heavy cleaning would be unnecessary. At some point the wood may need refinishing, but, again, the flooring supplier would be a good source of information on the best method for that. It comes down to two things, Remove grit as often and effectively as you can, and enhancing your mopping by adding a neutral cleaner with its surfactant capability.
