Question

When it comes to stripping and finishing floors, I notice the answers sometimes include the words percent of solids. What does this mean?

Answer

With floor finish, percent of solids refers to the amount of non-volatile materials (18-25%) in solution that will remain to form a film on the tile after the liquids have evaporated. The higher the solids content, the more finish is actually deposited each time the floor is coated and dries. In theory, the higher the solids, the fewer coats needed to build a maintainable base.
Strippers do not specify any solids content.
