Question

Greetings ICAN Members: Can you help? What is the average turnover rate for the commercial cleaning industry? Many Thanks - Allen Rathey

Answer

Allen,
Few in our industry seem to enjoy reporting on the turnover rates they experience. I looked at ours here at Krafft Cleaning and came up with a figure around 100%. That is a bit misleading as well because not all jobs saw a change in service technician in the last year. Some saw two or three.
In some cases, we were glad to see them leave. Turnover in janitorial is caused by the same factor that leads to the rapid dismissal of some and that is the widely held misconceptions about the nature of the work. Even our clients often see the work as not too demanding, or suitable to the less than mentally acute.
Our workers come from the same general population as the clients and when people hold to these "work is easy and for the less than alert" images, they either quit when facing the reality or are fired for being the slackers they thought the simple-minded cleaning job they took allowed them to be.
In either case, we should be happy they are gone. Good riddance!!
