Question

I’m a new business owner. On several occasions, when I’ve called on potential clients, especially medical offices, I’ve been asked, “Do you specialize in medical facilities?” or “Are you experienced in cleaning medical offices?” Are you aware of any certifications or information (books, links) that could help me specialize in this area?

Answer

There is no particular certification required to clean a doctor’s office, but customers may want to know if you are familiar with the general requirements. So, you will want to become familiar with OSHA requirements, and aseptic cleaning processes that eliminate cross-contamination, and general infection control procedures.
You can download an excellent medical cleaning primer from http://www.mntap.umn.edu/health/73-DisinfectionBMP.htm. It is called Disinfection Best Management Practices – Minnesota Technical Assistance Program.
It will be helpful to study the health care environmental services article, Center for Disease Control Guidelines for Environmental Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5210a1.htm
All employees should be trained to conform to the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard for housekeeping personnel who will clean blood spills or handle medical waste. You can find that web site at http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/bloodbornepathogens/
There is a web site regarding green cleaning of health care facilities at http://www.gghc.org/index.cfm. and a general working knowledge of disinfectants is especially helpful.
Finally, if you clean a medical clinic that is part of a hospital, you may be subject to JCAHO inspections (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations). You can learn about their accreditation from the web site: http://www.popmanual.com/jcaho.html?gclid=CODsvL7ajokCFRyVFQodlXQgCA
There is also a series of health care cleaning videos available on the Internet from some of the custodial training companies. Once you print out selected training articles you can construct a presentation manual. This can be shared with medical customers, showing them that your company is focused on health care cleaning procedures.
